Give Yourself A Pep Talk

Jun 9th, 2010 by Lady Liberty

By now, you’ve probably seen four-year-old Jessica stand on her bathroom sink and take life by the horns in the “Jessica’s Daily Affirmation” video. Her enthusiasm – “I can do anything good” – is contagious.

Her joie de vivre brings up some good questions:

  • How do you get pumped up?
  • What do you do when you need to give yourself a pep talk?
  • Have you told your family you love them lately?

Take a page out of this girl’s book and enjoy the simple things in life.

This is wonderful. I love how she not only gives herself affirmation, but also her loved ones. It’s definitely a good reminder to give a “shout out” to everyone we hold dear.

While my own pep talks are more subdued and don’t involve standing on the bathroom sink (was anyone else afraid she was going to fall off?), they are vital to me. I use them to get through all kinds of situations large and small – preparing to walk into a tough meeting, getting myself to the gym when all I want to do is sleep in, etc. Jessica has inspired me to take it a step beyond, and simply take a moment and joyfully celebrate everything and everyone that I love. What a great idea for a pick-me-up!

The confidence that Jessica shows we often struggle to find as we get older. One of the things I see in the Acton students at the end of each year is the re-emergence of confidence. After making it through a taxing nine months of study, sleepless nights, and immense pressure, Acton students know that they can survive just about anything. And, throughout the year, they have studied over 300 real world business cases in just about every industry you can imagine. The opportunity to fail in a safe environment, like the classroom, gives the Acton students a confidence in their business skills, saavy, and knowledge that wasn’t there before. One of our recent alumnae put it best when she said, “I think the greatest lesson, or the greatest value I walk away from Acton with is confidence. And I never thought that I was necessarily lacking in confidence. But the confidence to ask questions, confidence to put yourself out there and ask people things that you think might sound naive – I’m so much more confident in what I see and do in front of people than I was before in a business world. So I walk away definitely knowing that I can hold my own and I can say and ask any question in the business world and it will be a good one.”
