Commercial For Entrepreneurship

Jul 30th, 2010 by Lady Liberty

Director' ChairIf you had to make a commercial to promote entrepreneurship, what would it be?

To highlight how small and medium enterprises (SME) drive the economy, the European Commission hosted a video contest. The winning films answered one of these questions: What is entrepreneurship all about? What could encourage people to become entrepreneurs? What could counteract old prejudices and offer new visions of entrepreneurship? The winners had some creative approaches. Here’s an assortment of the videos. What do you think? What would you have done?

A Greek girl shows the importance of a fresh perspective.

This man escapes an Office Space-like existence in a cubicle.

A boy nurtures his dream until it becomes a reality.

Entrepreneurship is about accepting the challenge (and getting the girl).

You can watch the rest of the videos on the European SME Week website.

I like the commercial where the Greek girl turns the ingredients into a pizza. For me, this is the essence of entrepreneurship. Just by observing what was around her the little girl was able to identify a need and find the right tools (or ingredients) to meet it. I especially liked the imagery of the miserable faces as she looked around the room. The girl saw that there was a problem and instead of accepting it as life she looked around for ways to change the status quo. I think this is the definition of entrepreneurship.

I think the most interesting takeaway from these is what most of them had in common: the spark of an idea in childhood. “You can be anything when you grow up” needs to disappear as an empty platitude offered to children and actually begin to MEAN SOMETHING. That is, the HOW part. Let’s not TELL children they can be anything when the grow up–let’s SHOW THEM HOW.
