David Weekley
David Weekley's devotion to customers, employees, community and family set high standards for future Acton Scholars.
In 1976, a twenty-three year old Weekley shelved plans for a Harvard MBA to found Weekley Homes. Since that time, revenues have grown to over $1 billion in sales, earning the company a spot on Inc Magazine's 500 Fastest Growing Companies, and making it the second largest private homebuilder in America.
Weekley shares Acton's emphasis on creating long-term value. He rejected a lucrative public offering, saying: "It might have made more money for me personally, but it wouldn?t have been the same company." Weekley instead decided to focus on his employees and customers.
The results speak for themselves. Fortune magazine repeatedly names Weekley Homes as one of the ?100 Best Companies to Work For" in America, and year after year, JD Power and Associates ranks Weekley Homes first in homebuyer customer satisfaction, with a 90% customer satisfaction rating. Weekley even wrote a book for homebuyers: "How to Buy a Home Without Getting Hammered."
As a devoted entrepreneurial philanthropist, Weekley is one of the most generous donors in Texas and now spends half of his time on charitable work. Mr. Weekley is Past Chairman and current Executive Committee member of the Sam Houston Area Council of Boy Scouts, Past President of the Greater Houston Builder's Association, former Board of Directors member of St. Luke's Episcopal Health Charities, former Chair of the Greater Houston Community Foundation, and Board of Trustee Member and Capital Campaign Chairman for the Kinkaid School. The impact of his gifts is multiplied by the practical advice he offers so charities can operate more effectively and efficiently.
As important as business and community are for Weekley, his faith and family come first. He has served on the Vestry of the Palmer Memorial church and is a loving husband to wife Bonnie and father to his three children.
Lord Acton said: "To be able to look back upon one's life with satisfaction is to live twice." By this measure, David Weekley is the perfect role model for our Acton Scholars.
