Admissions & Application Information
How does Acton support students with significant others and/or families?
The dedication and intensity required from Acton affects not only you, but your family and significant others too. So we hold some sessions throughout the year in which students and their significant others get together with a teacher to discuss the contributions and sacrifices each has to make throughout our one year MBA.
Can you enroll in Acton without any previous work experience?
While our 1 year MBA appeals to many recent graduates, Acton accepts no more than five students a year who apply directly after college. For these select students, there is an even greater emphasis on test scores, history of leadership positions, community involvement, internships, after-school jobs, etc., to make up for the lack of work experience.
What is a typical day like at Acton?
While Acton students have to create their own schedules to best fit their individual needs (when they sleep, spend time with significant others, etc.), the following is a general idea of students’ daily schedules: 6:00am – 8:00am Study Groups, 8:00am – 11:00am Attend classes, 11:00am – 12:00pm Lunch, 12:00pm – until 12:00am Study. While other one year MBA programs often serve up business training “light,” at Acton the intensive schedule creates a proxy for what it feels like to really start, grow and run your own business.
How long is the Acton program?
The Acton program begins with Pre-Matriculation in early August, which prepares you to step into the classroom with a solid foundation in the tools and hard skills you’ll need to compete in the classroom. Classroom work begins in January and runs through May. When it comes to top one year MBA programs, nothing compares to Acton’s unique immersive curriculum.
Does Acton provide any student housing?
No, Acton students are responsible for finding and providing their own housing.
What does Pre-Matriculation entail?
You will be doing work in Cash & Valuation, Life of Meaning, Operations and Customers. Pre-Mat is delivered to you interactively, so you can work on it from wherever you have an internet connection.
When and where are the in-person classes held?
In-person classes are held from January through May at the Acton School of Business campus located just south of downtown Austin, TX on Riverside Drive. The in-person portion of the program includes one week one spring break.
Does Acton have a part-time or distance-learning program?
No. As a groundbreaking leader in 1 year MBA programs, Acton utilizes a case-method approach that requires students to lead the discussion in every class on a daily basis. The case method does not work well with distance learning. One of Acton’s strengths is delivering a cohesive program in a short amount time. In order to receive an MBA, our students must wisely use every minute of their 80 to 100 hours a week.
What is the usual class size?
The classroom will accommodate 30-40 students.
Am I able to work while enrolled in Acton?
There is no time for students to work while attending the in-person portion of the Acton MBA. Students work 80 to 100 hours or more a week attending class, meeting in peer groups, and preparing cases. You may, however, work during Pre-Mat, which runs from August through December.
Is Acton accredited?
Acton is a program of Hardin-Simmons University. Hardin-Simmons is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP).
